“If you want to master something, teach it. The more you teach, the better you learn.”
RICHARD FEYNMAN
SEE ONE
I wanted to be a designer before I knew what one was. From the logos on Transformers toys to the BBC2 idents, I was drawn to type and image. One day, while idly drawing monograms in the back of my maths book, a teacher said "there's a job for that you know". That started me on a path to the award-winning graphic design course at the University of Central Lancashire.
DO ONE
After university I worked at a number of agencies, first as a graphic designer then as an advertising creative. I loved working at young independent agencies and start ups, which allowed me more responsibilities and multidisciplinary roles on projects, allowing me an overview of how a creative business works.
TEACH ONE
In 2016 I was approached by my old uni to return as a lecturer in Creative Advertising, where I progressed to course leader. Running a creative degree has given me benefits I never anticipated, from developing a curriculum to leading a team.
Continuing to freelance with agencies and my own clients alongside this role ensured I was up to date with industry developments and able to connect the course with employers. Teaching has also made me a better creative through the need to communicate, demonstrate and challenge my own creative methodology.
I'm now looking forward to returning to industry and putting this into practice.
